Lay me down, lay me on down The day was a hunt and my mind is a hound Wake me anew, wake me anew When the sky turns brighter blue. Take my words, take all my words Until my skull's just sky and earth Tell me lies and sweet lullabies That turn these eyes brighter blue. Lay me down, lay me on down Till I learn this bird just by her sound Wake me anew, wake me anew When the sky turns brighter blue Make my home in the unknown Far away from this nagging drone Tell me lies and sweet lullabies That turn these eyes brighter blue.

I need a bite to eat and a hand to hold Mama told me that the sun was made of gold. When I flew into the sun my earth grew cold It was someone else's story to be told. I live above the clouds and I don't know Ask me what's above the clouds, I don't know. But there's so much going on around me Down where They surround me And if I had any advice to give It would be a reason to live. I am a sight to see and I should never grow old They won't refund a soul once it's sold. I live a quiet life, but I cry when the sun goes down I'll meet the love that's owed me underground. There's a voice in the trees that you won't hear You ask of what it speaks, I don't know. But there's so much going on around me Down where They surround me And if I had any advice to give It would be a reason to live.

I wanna tell you something new Something new that you've never heard. I wanna make it sound so old Sound so old, it's primordial. What can I say to the hurt in your eyes When you laugh, and the joy when you cry. When I go searching for the words Never quite sure just what I heard Chessboards of shifting textures Lush forests inside of deserts The darkest days, and brightest nights Stars in the ocean, starfish in the sky. Just wanna tell you it's okay In a new way, everyday First need to slightly screw up my mind With all that I find, before I unwind. Before I unwind...

No tender time No tender time in the pines tonight She brought a tribe and twine to the pines tonight. And she used their hair to light the dark And she drew a bulb from my heart. And we danced, and we drank And we danced, and they sang. No tender time Our big flame was a very untender time Our big flame was a color out of space and time. And she saw in me a delicacy And she drew my hands, and bound my feet And we danced, and they sang And we danced, through the pain. All was crumbling down and I was dancing Beneath the crying stars I was dancing World was on fire and I was dancing They laughed and they sang while I kept dancing Feet were on fire and I kept dancing;

High Horse 03:29
I was ridin' through the desert On a horse too short Searching every horizon To find my high horse. Met a rough stableman To sell me a stallion Said with this here saddle Never come down off your high horse Never, never come down Everything's allowed You'll feel so proud. Heaven is here on the ground Soft as a cloud Hear the silence in the crowd. Fortune lies, just beyond the horizon No ride your high horse.
7.
Ravensong 02:09
The days are long, the days are long Until the days are long long gone. The nights are sweet, the nights are sweet Until the night is all we see.

Miles' Up 03:36
See the city, dream the builders, build it high Leave room for nature, and all her symbols, trust your eyes. There is a peace in you and all you see The darkest valley is only cloudy for a while. Be a heathen, be a human, be on time Be a cynic, be a-liever, be a lie. But don't love anything ironically Rub your toesies across the grasses, close your eyes. Sometimes laughter feels like fire, breathe it free Don't mistake being awake as an end to dreams There is a peace in you that speaks to me Remember nothing can lead to something, and nothing is free.
10.
Heart Beat 03:50
And a great weight has been lifted No more chomping at the bit Now that I cut the line on you. I cut the light on, felt your sad retreat Idoled my mind up, heard your heart beat Heart Beat. And I can see honey colored air Purple mountain majesties Now that I cut the line on you. I drank the light from many golden cups And felt the white heat that made my heart beat Heart Beat.

about

I set out with the goal to record an album in as stripped-down a manner as possible. Virtues of a Closed Heart is just me, an acoustic guitar, and a single condenser microphone. I was listening to a lot of Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, and various artists from the psychedelic folk period of the 60's-70's during the composition. I wanted make an album that sounds like it could have been recorded at any time in the past 60-ish years.

This album includes my novel THE IMMORTAL, and a novella called SOMASSAULT, both in .PDF format.
